Murphy: “Another fantastic work by Bey Deckard” @ Joyfully Jay

Michelle says:

"Another fantastic work by Bey Deckard and equal time must be devoted to discussing the story line, characters, and the words themselves. The story picks up shortly after the devastation of their last mission in Sarge. The book is written in first person, present tense that is spectacularly executed. The author crafts the story so we are looking out at the world alternately through the eyes of both Sarge and Murphy and we know what they know and see what they see.

Murphy is sure and steady when it comes to his feelings for Sarge. It’s Sarge that is becoming blindsided by his feelings for Murphy. There is a constant internal push and pull as Sarge struggles on how much he wants to let Murphy in. On the outside, Sarge is emotionally impaired and a product of his military environment, but we don’t only see him from the outside. It is entertaining to watch his emotional range as Murphy keeps encroaching on his heart and there is unexpected humor rounding out their interactions.

The language, especially for Sarge, is appropriately gruff and it cuts right through to the core of the characters. The narrative is bare and stripped down while fully conveying every movement needed to fully bring the characters, as well as the setting, into full living color as Deckard creates three dimensional characters one brilliant word at a time. I found my eyes retracing phrases as I was reading as the language is perfectly chosen and offers the characters every single thing they need."

F.I.S.T.S. Handbook For Individual Survival in Hostile Environments

The F.I.S.T.S. Handbook.... what is it?

It is a book that contains both Sarge, Murphy, and a tiny "missing reel". There are three versions of it.

The Full-Colour edition has colour images of the covers inside, as well as a few extra images just for fun. It retails for $22 USD at Amazon and other places. Which is hella expensive, I know, for a 145 page book, but at that price I make a buck and change in royalties. If I can find somewhere else to get it printed for cheaper, I will, but for the moment that's how it stands.

However, if you're buying it thinking that there's going to be a whole lot of extra content... there isn't. I consider it sort of a "collector's copy" - I want a copy for myself. The missing reel is just extra, but it's not a full scene, and it's not intended to add to the story. Just give a peek into how the relationship took off. I will also be offering signed copies this version.

If you just want a print version with the two novelettes (and the missing reel) but don't care about colour images, then the second version is for you:

The Black & White edition has black and white images of the covers inside and no extra images. It retails for $8 USD at Amazon and other places.

If you don't want a print version but would like to have the two novelettes (and the missing reel) in electronic format, the third version is for you:

The kindle version is an e-copy of the full-colour edition. It retails for $4 USD.

⭐⭐ Murphy (F.I.S.T.S. #2) Available Now ⭐⭐

murphy-cover-600x900My follow-up novelette, Murphy, is available now at Amazon (free with Kindle Unlimited). I'm giving the ol' KDP Select (where you are exclusive to Amazon in return for being enrolled in their promotions and KU) a go for now, just to get an understanding of what it is. So, for the moment, it's only available for Kindle (mobi). The upside is that you can convert mobi files to anything else using apps like Calibre or read mobi on just about anything with the free Kindle app.

In addition to Murphy being released this month, I'm working on a special full-colour print book that includes Sarge and Murphy plus a very short scene I'm calling "The Missing Reel". I'm not sure if I'm going to do an e-copy of it just yet.

So... want to read a little about Murphy? Check out these blog reviews:

And these Amazon reviews:

"Deckard has honed his craft to a fine point, making the F.I.S.T.S. space adventure the juiciest m/m read I've had in ages." - Varlo

"Murphy was a smart and sexy book - deeply satisfying on every level." - FIFI

Coming soon, to an estore near you…

Just finished writing Murphy, F.I.S.T.S. #2. *lifts mug of wine* Cheers!

Look for it in an estore soon. I'll also be making a special edition print copy with both Sarge and Murphy novellettes included. :)

Mid June already?

Where does the time go?

New things!

1 - Caged is being edited.  Professionally. Nothing of the story changes... just tightening up the text a little and fixing the niggling little typos/errors. I'm also adding a map at the beginning - might help the immediate assumption that it's historical fiction rather than historical fantasy.

2 - Spires is at 70%. I'm pretty sure that the final title will be Heart: Beyond the Spires.  I like long titles. But we'll see.

3 - It's fucking gorgeous out these days. Between the beautiful weather and The Sopranos, my productivity is taking a hit; but, you know what? I'm my own boss, I make my own schedule.

4 - Sword is not officially on hold just yet. I may still want to continue while I'm working on Spires. Might be nice to jump tracks every once in a while.

5 - Murphy got a little surgery to remove some growths on his leg. He would like everyone to know just how miserable he is.

Yesterday was a writing day. Today is a drawing day. Worked out some mental kinks with a portrait of Gabriel Macht as Harvey Specter in Suits. I got sucked into the third season.

Sleepy Evenings

Sleepy dog is sleepy. He's my constant companion. Doesn't mind when I have Wardruna on repeat for hours. Keeps my feet warm. Doesn't understand why the computer gets my lap and he doesn't. Snores, barks, and howls in his sleep. He's a great writing companion and never blushes when I read out the smutty bits.

More Edits. Done Yet?

Done yet?

Long day of editing yesterday. stretches shoulders I really should get myself a good chair and desk soon before I become a cripple. The print version of Caged is on track to be released on the 15th. I'm still waiting for some more edits but I'm hoping they'll be minor, or already taken care of in the first batch, so I don't have to spend so many hours digging through the book again.

It's interesting to see how my writing has matured.

New chapter finished for the sequel. I'm on track there too - passed the 1/3 mark. I'm wondering, however, if this book might be a smidge longer. There's so much of the story left to tell.

I also have to get back to a writing side-project that I'm working on.

And... I have to stop thinking about this other book I have to write. It can wait... I can't do everything at once.

Grey skies… cozy on the couch with my dog.

Finished chapter 10 of the sequel to Caged - working title "Beyond the Spires" - and it's going well. I like the pace at which its going, considering I'm also in the middle of a collaborative project with another author (which just hit the 35K word mark this week).

I keep wanting to release excerpts of the WIP but there are spoilers. I wonder how other authors deal with that? Personally I'm the type of guy who absolutely hates spoilers - I go out of my way to avoid them as much as I can, which includes trying not to watching movie previews. (I am currently refraining from looking up anything about The Grand Budapest Hotel - the new Wes Anderson movie.)

I've been looking for a new desk, something antique and sturdy. Working on the couch is going to do in my back eventually.

I got confirmation for the date that my book participates in "Don't Buy My Love" at the Goodreads group M/M Romance - May 16th. Mark your calendars with that date if you want a free e-book in exchange for writing a fair review!

Wondering which retailer pays me the most?

#1 is Payhip. Not a retailer, but an online shop that I've set up myself. This is where I make the most return on my books.

Then after that it gets a little complicated, but these are the three best choices:

At Eden Books*, I make 70% royalties for all titles.

At Smashwords, I make 60% royalties for all titles.

At Amazon, for books OVER $2.99 (USD) I make 70% royalties and for books UNDER $2.99 I make 35%

So... if the book is under $2.99, buy from Eden Books or Smashwords.

If the books is over $2.99, buy from Eden Books or Amazon.

But best of all, buy from my Payhip store :)

*Not all my titles are available at Eden yet as of 25/09/23 - I'm working on it.
