April Showers Bring May Flowers… Yeah… SNOW showers.

Bugger the weather.

Anyhoo... I just realized I haven't said a word here in almost a month so I figured I'd catch you up on what's the what here at Castle Deckard.

  1. I've passed off some of Kestrel's Talon to be edited. It's nearly done and I'll post a release date when I have one.
  2. I'm still not sure what I'm going to finish next, but I'd like to get #3 from The Actor's Circle out by summer. Called The Window in Between, it's a third pair to join the cast, and like the other two books, deals with themes of self-discovery and acceptance. Book #4, as yet unnamed, will reunite the six men in one location. I've already written so much dialogue for #4... I'm looking forward to sinking my teeth into it.
  3. There's also Learning to Speak starring Saban from Baal's Heart... I just need to get it started. I know the story.
  4. Speaking of Baal's Heart.... April 11th is the one year anniversary of Fated: Blood and Redemption and will go on sale at 8am (EST) in the US and 8am (GMT) in the UK. It's a Kindle countdown sale, so the earlier you grab it, the better. I'll post again on Monday about it.
  5. Finally...

Luce whistled to himself as the elevator made its way down, wondering what it was that absolutely required his physical presence.  The memo had been dramatically short and to the point:

Come to your old office. Tell no one.

Despite being happy with his work Above, Luce'd gotten a fun little thrill out of ducking out for the afternoon to attend this intriguingly clandestine meeting. Luce grinned and straightened his paisley tie, smoothing it down over his periwinkle blue shirt as the lift came to a stop with a soft ding. Walking with long, straight backed strides, Luce nodded in greeting to the workers in the hallway, a few of them staring in wide-eyed amazement as he passed them by. Hearing whispers, he grinned to himself.
After rounding another bend, down to the main floor of the common area, he took the stairs up to the office two at a time. Pausing at the doorway, his hand lifted to knock, he smirked. What was that... excitement he felt? It had been a while...
Luce rapped the door just once for decorum and entered, walking into the well-appointed office with a bright smile.

"Now what did you have me come all the way down here for? You know I'm a busy man..." he said to the figure in the chair. However, when the chair swivelled around and he saw that it was just the foreman, Luce frowned.

"Saul? Where's Byron?" Luce asked the big Abaddonian, a touch apprehensive.

The demon, hulking and tusked with eyes like bullet holes, ducked his head like a shamed dog.

"He's not here, sir," Saul mumbled.

Luce clenched his jaw, his whole body tense.

"Well... where is he?"

"That's the thing, sir," replied Saul in a meek voice. "We can't find him anywhere..."

That's right... There's a sequel to Devil brewing in my skull and that's how I think I'll start it. It probably won't be a long book, but I'm going to try to get it out in time for Halloween of next year. :)

And that's it! I have to get back to writing.

Bottom of My Heart

"Je t'aime."
"What does that mean?"
"It means I love you."
"No... No, you don't."
"I do."
"You're just upset because he's seeing someone else. Call me when you start thinking with your dick again."
"God... you're an asshole."
"See, that's better. Yes. I am an asshole. Now go peddle your love somewhere else... I don't want it."
"Christ."
"You're crying? That's it..."
"Don't hang up! Please? Ok? Ok? I've stopped."
"I don't need this."
"But... Listen... I thought you and I were—"
"No."
"But I thought—"
"No."
"Do you enjoy hurting me?"
"I don't care one way or the other."
"Jesus... Why do you have to say that? Don't you know what it feels like to have your heart crapped all over?"
"Actually... I don't. No one's been able to find mine."
"Oh."
There was a long pause where he could hear sniffling and hitched breathing on the other end. Closing his eyes, he let out a sigh and rubbed his forehead.
"Ok. Listen... Stop fucking crying. Get some sleep. Take a day to get your head on straight. Then we'll talk."
"Can I come over?"
"Maybe tomorrow."
"Tonight?"
"What the fuck did I just say?"
"Ok. Ok. I'm sorry."
"I don't want you to be sorry. I want you to stop crying and pay attention to my words so I don't have to repeat myself."
"I will. I promise."
"Now go to bed like a good boy."
"I will. Then we'll talk tomorrow?"
"Then we'll talk, yes... But, if you ever want your dick anywhere near my ass again, leave the 'I love you' crap out of it."
"Ok. I promise."
"Good."
He hung up, lit another cigarette, and ducked out the window to the fire escape. The night breeze was cool on his bare chest and he smiled as he stood watching the twinkling city lights below.

Lonely Ghosts

When I was very young, I remember being in the car a lot at night on the highway—my father driving and me resting my head against the window, watching the moonlit trees whip by, mesmerized by the way the guardrail seemed to undulate as we sped on through the dark.

On the darkest stretches of these curving two-lane highways, I could see what seemed to be misty shapes, flowing alongside our car. Ghosts that had long lost the way back to loved ones, drawn to the sinuous paths the highways carved through the silver and black woods, pulled along by kinetic energy, yearning for the warmth of the living to give them purpose.

"Come," I would whisper through the glass. "Come with me. Follow, and I will show you love. Obey me, and you will find a home in my heart."

And I drew them to me, the lonely ghosts. By the dozens, by the hundreds, by the thousands, they heard my words and joined me on my journey.

For a lifetime, I've collected them, and when I lay my head down to rest, they comfort me and call me their own. My ghosts. My loves.

Because of them, I am never alone.

Stowaways

Let's hide beneath the sheets;
Crisp, cool cotton
Cocoons our bodies' heat.
Eyes closed, lips parted;
My breath for yours,
Yours for mine.
Twined limbs, selfish hands;
Quiet hearts, shared minds.
Let's stow away in stolen time.

WHAT AM I DOING?

Every once in a while, I'm overwhelmed by a "what the fuck am I doing?" sort of moment. It goes a little like:

I'm not a writer, I'm a painter... or a computer tech... or a web designer... or a manager... or or or... shit, what am I doing writing?  I don't know how to write... Am I going to keep writing? Is there a point to it? Is it a medical symptom? Have I gone mad? Should I go get an astrophysics degree instead?

Then I sit down and read a few chapters of something I wrote, smile, thank my characters, and get back to business.

It's not so much a lack of confidence thing... more like I am literally trying to figure out how suddenly I've become a writer. It feels weirdly surreal at times. Last week was my two year anniversary and I think it spooked me some. How can it be two years already? What I figured was going to be a hobby that I'd abandon after a few books has turned into a real thing that I do almost every day. I'm certainly not making a living off of it. Not yet. But... it's not nothing.

Anyway - so I've hit the 70k mark on Kestrel's Talon after being a touch spooked and overwhelmed and uncharacteristically concerned about whether people would care for it at all. Thankfully, my brain's gone back to normal and the words are flowing again with me as their target audience (though I do hope at least one other person will enjoy it!). The worst part (ie. hard to write bits) is behind me. The next 50k should be smooth sailing. I'm excited. I'm tempted to release the soundtrack before the book, but I'll wait at least a few weeks until I know for sure I don't need another song. I'm also going to do a few more cover ideas for it... if you've signed up for my newsletter, you'll be able to vote next month on your favourite and help me choose :)

Wondering which retailer pays me the most?

#1 is Payhip. Not a retailer, but an online shop that I've set up myself. This is where I make the most return on my books.

Then after that it gets a little complicated, but these are the three best choices:

At Eden Books*, I make 70% royalties for all titles.

At Smashwords, I make 60% royalties for all titles.

At Amazon, for books OVER $2.99 (USD) I make 70% royalties and for books UNDER $2.99 I make 35%

So... if the book is under $2.99, buy from Eden Books or Smashwords.

If the books is over $2.99, buy from Eden Books or Amazon.

But best of all, buy from my Payhip store :)

*Not all my titles are available at Eden yet as of 25/09/23 - I'm working on it.
