The black speck had mysteriously appeared that morning. \u201cReally?\u201d Matt could see just fine, and it didn\u2019t hurt, but the fact that it had moved unsettled him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Frowning, Wayne nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
By nightfall, the speck had passed through Matt\u2019s iris and disappeared into his pupil. Suddenly, he could see only black and white from that eye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBabe, the weirdest thi\u2014\u201d His heart lurched. Leaning over his husband was a shadowy figure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHm?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhat the hell is that<\/em>?\u201d The figure lifted its head. It had empty white eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWhat\u2019s what<\/em>?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jaw clenched, Matt closed his left eye. The world was in colour again, the creature gone. Opening his left brought it back. It wasn\u2019t the only shadow creature either\u2014there were three more out in the hallway. They slowly turned to face him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Wayne\u2019s smile dropped. \u201cYou\u2019re shaking. What\u2019s wrong?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The doctor had no answers for them. She wanted to do more tests, but that meant removing the eyepatch again, and Matt couldn\u2019t. The last time, he\u2019d revealed a creature an inch from his nose, malevolent and silent\u2014Matt had pissed himself in fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n His skin crawled, knowing they<\/em> were out there, but at least he couldn\u2019t see them. Terrified and exhausted, he clung to Wayne like a life raft. Was that a breeze, or was something<\/em> touching his cheek? He prayed for the nightmare to end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cOh no.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Startled, Matt turned to his husband.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI don\u2019t know how to say this\u2026 Matt, honey, there\u2019s another one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fear made Matt\u2019s voice hoarse. \u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIn your eye. I thought I was imagining it earlier, but it\u2019s really there.\u201d Wayne\u2019s face was pale. \u201cAnother speck.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
